The Last Great Day โ also called the Eighth Day โ is the seventh and final annual holy day in God's plan. It pictures one of the most merciful and hopeful events in all of Scripture: the Great White Throne Judgment, when the vast majority of humanity who have never had a genuine opportunity for salvation will be resurrected to their first real chance at eternal life.
What is the Last Great Day?
The Last Great Day โ called the Eighth Day in Leviticus 23:36, 39 โ immediately follows the seven-day Feast of Tabernacles, though it stands as a separate holy day in its own right. It is the seventh and final of God's annual holy days and completes the picture of His plan for all of humanity.
While the Feast of Tabernacles pictures the Millennium โ Christ's thousand-year reign on earth โ the Last Great Day points beyond that to what happens after the Millennium concludes: the resurrection of all who have ever lived and died without a genuine opportunity for salvation.
"On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, 'If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.'"
โ John 7:37โ38The Great White Throne Judgment
Revelation 20 reveals that after the Millennium, Satan will be loosed for a short time, then finally destroyed. Then comes the event this day pictures โ the Great White Throne Judgment. The sea, death and Hades will give up the dead that are in them. All who have ever lived without truly understanding God's truth will stand before Him.
This is not a judgment of condemnation โ it is a judgment of opportunity. These billions of people will be resurrected to physical life, given the Holy Spirit, and granted their first real chance to understand God's truth, repent of their sins, and accept Jesus Christ as their Saviour. The books โ God's Word โ will be opened to them for the first time.
"And I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it... And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books."
โ Revelation 20:11โ12God's Mercy for All Humanity
The Last Great Day reveals the breathtaking scope of God's mercy and love. The vast majority of humanity โ the billions who lived and died never truly hearing the Gospel, never having their minds opened to God's truth โ have not been lost. They have not been condemned to hell. They are simply awaiting their time of judgment โ their first real opportunity for salvation.
This is one of the most misunderstood doctrines in all of Christianity. God is not failing in His mission. He has a perfect plan โ and the Last Great Day reveals that His plan encompasses every human being who has ever lived. Not one soul will be lost without a genuine opportunity to understand and choose God's way of life.
"The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance."
โ 2 Peter 3:9The New Heaven and New Earth
After the Great White Throne Judgment comes the ultimate fulfillment of God's plan โ a new heaven and a new earth, where God the Father Himself will come to dwell with humanity. The holy city, New Jerusalem, will descend from heaven. There will be no more death, sorrow, crying or pain. God will wipe away every tear. All things will be made new.
The Last Great Day is therefore not a day of gloom but of incredible hope โ pointing forward to the eternal age when God's plan for all of His creation will be complete and He will be "all in all" (1 Corinthians 15:28).
"And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away."
โ Revelation 21:4How We Observe It Today
The Last Great Day is an annual Sabbath โ a holy convocation on which no regular work is done. In 2026 it falls on Saturday, October 3, immediately following the Feast of Tabernacles. Members gather for worship services, reflecting on the magnificent scope of God's plan and His mercy for all of humanity.
